40 foot R. Pearson designed and built steel sailing yacht.
Launched 1983. Refit April 2005. The Lazy Bones is a proven offshore sailing yacht with tens of thousands of blue water miles under her keel. She was purpose finished to work-boat standards rather than traditional yacht-standards, to allow for servicing in remote 3rd world locations. Where production yachts would often be stuck for months awaiting specialized parts, “The Bones” would typically be serviced and on her way in a matter of hours using local fabrication.
“This is a sound and strong vessel, well designed, constructed and maintained. “

OWNERS COMMENTS
THE LAZY BONES IS A SIMPLE, STRONG, LOW COST, RELIABLE BLUE WATER CRUISING BOAT THAT HAS NEVER LET US DOWN IN 15 YEARS OF CRUISING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ASIA WITH OUR 2 CHILDREN ABOARD. THE BOAT IS TOUGH AS NAILS AND WILL GIVE MANY MORE YEARS OF SERVICE WITH MINIMAL EXPENSE.
THE BOAT HAS AN “OPEN” INTERIOR LAYOUT ALLOWING MAXIMUM VENTILATION AND LIVING SPACE. THE BOAT HAS A PERMANENT GALLEY TABLE AND SEPARATE SETTEE, NORMALLY ONLY FOUND IN LARGER BOATS.
THE BOAT HAS A HOLLOW BOX KEEL FOR ANCHORS, CHAIN AND DROP-IN TANKS. ALL OTHER INTERIOR SPACE IS GIVEN OVER TO LOCKERS. THE BOAT IS WELL DESIGNED FOR CRUISING, WITH SIGNIFICANTLY MORE TANKS AND LOCKER SPACE THAN TYPICAL OF PRODUCTION BOATS OF A SIMILAR SIZE.
MOST SYSTEMS ABOARD ARE MANUAL TO KEEP THEM SIMPLE AND RELIABLE AND ARE BEST SUITED TO A YOUNGER, ACTIVE CREW LOOKING TO CRUISE COMFORTABLY AND SAFELY ON A BUDGET. SHE WILL ALSO PERFORM WELL FOR AN OLDER CREW LOOKING TO RETIRE, KEEP FIT AND SAIL COMFORTABLY WITHOUT INVESTING A FORTUNE.
THE BOAT SAILS WELL AND SURPRISES MANY PEOPLE THAT THINK OF STEEL BOATS AS POOR PERFORMERS. THE BONES REGULARLY OUTPERFORMS MANY BOATS OF SIMILAR SIZE, ESPECIALLY AS CONDITIONS FRESHEN. UPWIND ESPECIALLY SHE CAN KEEP GOING IN HEAVY CONDITIONS WHEN MOST SIMILAR SIZED BOATS CANNOT.
THE BOAT WILL HEAVE TO COMFORTABLY IN STORM CONDITIONS. UNDER YANKEE AND TRIPLE REEFED MAIN WE BEAT OFF A LEE SHORE HANDILY IN SURVIVAL CONDITIONS.
THE ENGINE WAS SERVICED 500 HOURS AGO TO CORRECT CORROSION IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM (20 YEARS OLD). THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND STANDPIPE WERE REPLACED AND THE HEAD, VALVES AND GUIDES SERVICED. THE PRE-COMBUSTION CHAMBERS WERE REPLACED AND THE INJECTORS SERVICED. A SPARE SET OF INJECTORS ARE ABOARD. THE CYLINDERS WERE FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION WITH NO VISIBLE WEAR. THE ENGINE STARTS ON THE FIRST CRANK WITH NO REQUIREMENT FOR PRE-HEAT. THE ENGINE WILL START WITH THE HAND CRANK IN CASE OF BATTERY FAILURE.
BOAT HISTORY
THE LAZY BONES WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT SPECIFICALLY AS A BLUE WATER CRUISER AND WAS OUTFITTED TO COMMERCIAL STANDARDS AND FINISH TO INCREASE RELIABILITY, REDUCE COSTS, AND TO ALLOW MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR IN REMOTE, THIRD WORLD LOCATIONS. THE BONES WAS LAUNCHED IN 1983 AND WAS CRUISED IN MEXICO AND HAWAII FOR 4 YEARS BY RON PEARSON, THE BUILDER AND DESIGNER.
RON PEARSON HAS DESIGNED/BUILT MANY SUCCESSFUL BOATS OVER THE YEARS. MANY OF THESE CAN BE FOUND AT Origami Magic.
WE MET RON WHILE CRUISING IN OUR PREVIOUS BOAT AND IMMEDIATELY BECAME INTERESTED IN OWNING “THE BONES”. WE SOLD OUR BOAT AND TOOK POSSESSION OF THE BONES IN HAWAII IN 1987 AND CRUISED THE PACIFIC AND SE ASIA FOR THE NEXT 15 YEARS, WITH ONE OF OUR CHILDREN BORN ALONG THE WAY IN FIJI.
OUR CHILDREN ARE NOW GETTING READY FOR UNIVERSITY. WE HAVE MOVED ASHORE TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION AND HAVE PLACED THE BONES FOR SALE RATHER THAN HAVE HER AGE AND SPOIL WHILE WE ARE BUSY ASHORE.
